1^st through 8^th grades will compete by grade in mulitple rounds of spelling words.  The competition is limited to 25 competitors per grade with a maximum of 3 students per school per grade. The overall winner will be crowned the Spelling Bee Champion!

Who Can Compete?
Any 1st-8th grade student from any public, private and charter school or home-schooled in Central Ohio.

How does the Competition Work?
Students will be compete by grade in 2 preliminary rounds, and then move to immediate word elimination rounds.

• Round 1 lasts 2-3 minutes (max) with the students being provided 3-5 words to spell correctly.  At the end of the round, students will be scored on their accuracy in spelling the words correctly.  10 points will be awarded for each correct answer (max of 30 points available).  Students are able to use the enter time.  Any student getting 1 or no words correct will be eliminated from future rounds.

• Round 2 lasts 2-3 minutes (TBD), and students are again asked to spell 3-5 words.  This is a timed round and points are awarded based on correctly spelling the word and time to complete.  Points will be awarded as 15 points for each correct answer, and 5 points for each 20 seconds under the time limit (example 1:40-2:00 = 5 points, 1:20-1:40 = 10 points, 1:00-1:19 = 15 points, etc). Students must answer 2 questions correctly in Round 2 in order to receive the time bonus.

• Rounds 3-4 The 3 students with the highest point totals will move into single word elimination rounds.  The top 3 will be provided the same word at the same time.  The first 2 that can spell it correctly the fast move to the final round (if only 1 person spells it correctly then they are crowned the champion).  If 2 people spell the word incorrectly they will compete against each other again on an additional word (same rules above) to determine 2nd and 3rd place.  If 2 people answer the word correctly, then they move to a final 4th round with the same rules above to determine a champion.

• Determination of students advancing to the 3rd round will based on (in the following order):
  • Overall points
  • If tied, then earliest exact time completing round 2 (must have answered at least 1 question correctly in round 2)
  • If still tied, then up to 5 question spelling sudden death per question.  At the end of each question, the final 3 remaining will advance to the finals.
  • If still tied, random # guessed between 1-100 with the 3 closest to the # advancing to the finals

What Do the Spelling Challenges Champions Receive?
Within each grade, prizes will be awarded to:

1st Place: $25 and 1 free month at Learning Rx
2nd Place: $10 and 1 free month at Learning Rx
3rd Place: 1 Free month at Learning Rx

OTHER RULES & STIPULATIONS

• No crowd participation will be allowed.  If answers are provided to a student from a member of the audience, that student will be disqualified.
• Your submission will be accepted based in the order / time that you submit your registration.
• All rules are subject to modification or to be changed without notice.
