What is Math Challenge?

1st through 8th grades will compete by grade in 2 rounds of challenging math problems.  The competition is limited to 10 competitors per grade and 2 students per school.  The winner for each grade will be crowned the Math Champions!

Who Can Compete?
Any 1st-8th grade student from any public, private and charter school or home-schooled in Central Ohio.

How does the Competition Work?
Students will be compete by grade through 2 rounds of math problems.  Each round there will be 3 math problems they will be asked to solve.

  • Round 1 - Last 3-4 minutes with the students solving 3 problems.  At the end of the round, students will be scored on their accuracy in solving the problem.  10 points will be awarded for each correct answer (maximum of 30 points).  Students are able to use the entire time.
  • Round 2 - Last 4 minutes and students are again asked to solve 3 problems.  This is a timed round and points are awarded based on correctly answering the questions and time to complete.  Points will be awarded as 15 points for each correct answer and 5 points for each 20 seconds under the 4 minute time limit?.  Students must answer 2 questions correctly in this round to receive their time bonus.

How is the Math Challenge Champion decided?
Place within the grades will be determined by:

  • Overall points
  • Tie Breakers (in order)
  • Fastest time completing round 2 (must have answered at least 1 question correctly in round 2)
  • A sudden death math challenge of up to 5 questions will be held.  At the end of each question, if only one person has answered the question correctly then they are the winner.
  • Coin Flip

What Do the Math Challenges Champions Receive?
Within each grade, prizes will be awarded to:

1st Place: $25 and 1 free month at School of Math
2nd Place: $10 and 1 free month at School of Math
3rd Place: 1 Free month at School of Math

OTHER RULES & STIPULATIONS

  • No crowd participation will be allowed.  If answers are provided to a student from a member of the audience, that student will be disqualified.
  • Your submission will be accepted based in the order / time that you submit your registration.
  • All rules are subject to modification or to be change without notice.
